Winner of the Caméra d’or at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, Jellyfish (Meduzot) is a richly imaginative portrait of three very different women emotionally adrift in Tel Aviv. Co-directed by acclaimed Israeli author Etgar Keret (The Nimrod Flipout, The Girl on the Fridge) and his wife Shira Geffen, the film explores Israeli frames of mind in a unique fashion. Join us for a unique experience of Chagall and the Artists of the Russian Jewish Theater, 1919-1949 exhibit showcasing the extraordinary artwork created for Russian Jewish theater productions in the 1920s and 1930s. The exhibition brings to light a remarkable period in the early years of the Soviet Union when innovative visual artists, including Marc Chagall, Natan Altman, and Robert Falk joined forces with avant-garde playwrights, actors, and theatrical producers to create a theater experience with extraordinary mass appeal. Our lecturer will be Dima Glazer, who has been a teacher and a student
of kabbalah for many years at World Academy of Kabbalah. Dima’s
lecture will focus on the subjects of history of kabbalah, what
kabbalah is, and a relationship between humans and kabbalah.

“Israel - Diaspora Relations: Changing Narratives” presented by premier Israeli lecturer, Rachel Korazim
In honor of Israel’s 61 years of independence, Mishmash group invites you to enjoy a unique opportunity to hear premier Israeli lecturer, Dr. Rachel Korazim, on her short visit to the Bay Area, and engage in a meaningful honest conversation about the Israel Diaspora relationship.
Based on reflections on the last 100 years of Jewish and Zionist history, this session will explore early images of Israel in the eyes of the Diaspora as well as images of the Diaspora in Israel. We will also explore possible new venues as Israel is turning 61.

The campaign to free Soviet Jewry is a major event in Jewish history. By 1992, one and a half million Jews had left the Soviet Union to live in freedom as a direct result of what was likely the most successful human rights campaign of all times.
“Refusenik” is the first retrospective documentary to chronicle the thirty-year movement to free Soviet Jews. It shows how a small grassroots effort bold enough to take on a Cold War superpower blossomed into an international human rights campaign that engaged the disempowered and world leaders alike. Told through the eyes of activists on both sides of the Iron Curtain - many of whom survived punishment in Soviet Gulag labor camps.
This documentary is an example of well-crafted storymaking at its finest. Original interviews with key leaders of the movement are fascinating, as are the archival photographs and film footage — some of it made and smuggled out of the Soviet Union by activists who had traveled to Russia on tourist visas.

The Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, which officially opened the doors to its new building on June 8, 2008, is a unique architectural vision that offers a wide range of dynamic exhibitions.
We are happy to invite you to visit the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco and to take a free guided tour of the Dateline 09 exhibition that presents the works of two leading Israeli artists: Adi Nes, who works in photography, and Yael Bartana, who works in film and video.
Adi Nes: Biblical Stories is a modern-day retelling of familiar stories from the Hebrew Bible. Using cinematic techniques and referencing iconic works in the history of painting and photography, Nes re-imagines biblical scenes in contemporary settings.
Yael Bartana: Short Memory showcases several of artisit’s groundbreaking films that address social and political issues in contemporary Israel.

We are happy to announce the launching of the new program for the Russian- speaking community “Israel through the Eye of a Movie Camera”. This program offers a monthly screening of various new Israeli films followed by discussion.
The program is co-presented by the Israel Center of JCF, Israeli Consulate and Palo Alto JCC

Chen is caught in the middle of the cultural conflict raging between his Russian-born mother and his Israeli father. One day he stumbles on a ballroom dance class for young people and sees Natalie, a stunning young Russian girl with whom he immediately falls in love. His interest in Natalie results in his taking ballroom dancing classes and ultimately bridging the cultural divide in his own family – with the help of the Cha-cha-cha and the Tango. Chen’s teachers are former world champions from Russia who never quite fulfilled their potential and who find themselves battling their own demons while training their young students.
