We’re excited to start Israeli movies nights!

We would love to explore the Israeli Orthodox society.The first night will be on Friday, December 16th, starting with a Shabbat ceremony in a cozy atmosphere Potluck style following with movie discussion.

Hanukkah Celebration With Residents of Lytton Gardens Senior Communities

In the Mishmash tradition of building a vibrant Jewish community, we invite you to share your time and talent in making this Hannukah festive and fun for the Russian (and English) speaking Jewish babushkas and dedushkas of the Senior Center Lytton Gardens in Palo Alto.

As part of this volunteering event we’ll be heading a fun sing-along of popular Yiddish songs and we need your help. Joining our efforts will be Karen Berger, Chorus director of Yiddish Choristers.

When: December 18th, 2011, 11:00am-12:30pm

TELEM Talks: “I Touched the Kotel Stones”

Join us on a virtual tour of Jerusalem throughout history. Israeli’s educators and guides from the group Telem will take us to the streets of the Holy city through stories of the paratroopers entering the city in 1967.

When: Thursday, December 08, 2011 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

“…1967. War begins. Jordanian shells throughout Jerusalem. Late at night the paratroopers are about to breach the line. Last preparations are made. The orders are given. Ammunition check. There is time to write few words on a piece of paper. And then: “Hevre! Zazim!” We move. This is the story of the battle for Jerusalem – same place, same warriors, 2000 years difference. We will follow the paratroopers in the streets and alleys, enter the Old City with them through the Lions Gate and touch with them the cold stones, the holy stones of the Wailing Wall…”

Israel and the Middle East – This is about the Middle East today, about hopes and reality, about war and peace.

This is about terrorism and intelligence, about drifts and alliances, about interests and conflict. What is the connection between Hamas and Iran? What is the game Hezbollah plays? What is happening between Israel, Egypt and Turkey? Together we will analyze the current events, up to the very day of the seminar, and discuss the future of our region, of our home.

Our Thanksgiving - Immigration Stories Night

When Mayflower reached the shores of New England, the pilgrims encountered the new world inhabited by friendly people. The natives showed the Englishmen how to make turkey stuffing, corn bread and pumpkin pie, and established a tradition to play American Football for Thanksgiving, as revolutionist history would have it. Aeroflots, Deltas and Lufthansas brought us to this land of opportunity, milk, honey and medicinal herbs (love it all!) Come share the story of your arrival and tell your friends about your first American meal, who were the locals who greeted you and what you are thankful for.

When: November 22nd, 6:30pm-11:00pm.

What: This will be a potluck, so bring any food or drinks you want to enjoy and share. Share your Thanksgiving food tradition or create a new one!

We will collect donations on behalf of Jewish Family and Children Services - the friendly natives that helped many of many of us settle in our new land.

P.S. The event starts at 6:30, but please join whenever you can.The evening will continue to a bonfire on Ocean Beach for those of us not burdened by heavy employment.

Silicon Valley Jewish Film Festival (www.svjff.org) is here and it’s not to be missed!

Mishmash will be attending multiple screenings throughout the festival and we hope you can join us. We’ll watch the films together and after we can go for drinks to discuss them. Writer’s Block Party and Benefit

Twenty years after the fall of the Soviet block, your local Russian Jewish writers are breaking through writer’s block to tell their stories, and yours.

Join us for a literary evening and reading benefit. Members of the MishMash Writing salon and local writers will share excerpts from their work for the upcoming anthology of Russian Jewish Bay Area writing.

November 12th, 4:30pm,

Cafe Trieste, 1667 Market street, San Francisco

Vodka and seledka (herring) will make their literary appearances, while you can treat yourself to coffee, tea, pastries and other libations prepared and poured by the baristas of café Trieste.

Suggested donation of $15, though no one will be turned away for lack of funds. All proceeds will benefit I.M.U., a local non-profit focused on multicultural education and social justice.

CLUB Z (For Teens)

Club Z is where teens explore, discuss, debate and learn about being Jewish through connection with Israel. The program is a Jewish identity building model designed to build early teens’ awareness of the role of Israel for Jews around the world.

Most sessions will be from 6-9pm on Saturday evenings, with a few on Sundays. Dinner will be provided. For more information visit our site.

MISHMASH-KEVAH Jewish Traditions Series

We are proud to be collaborating with Kevah in organizing our own text study group! Our group of 8-12 people will meet monthly to study major Jewish traditions. A wonderful Jewish scholar Marina Zilbergerts will guide us in using Jewish texts to explore the significance of each tradition and discuss ways to make its observance meaningful.

When: First meeting on Tuesday, October 4th · 7:00pm - 10:00pm

Marina studied Torah, Talmud, Midrash, Jewish law and philosophy at Yeshiva University’s Stern College for Women; completed a Master’s degree in Hebrew Literature at Berkeley, and taught Talmud for the Merkavah Torah Institute .
